Food Pantry Update

In October of 2023, the Maine Township Food Pantry and the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD), entered into a partnership which has now enabled the pantry to increase the quantity and variety of the food it can provide and continues to be a very popular resource for residents in need.

Last May, the board voted unanimously to create a 501(c)(3) and enter into an agreement with the GCFD. The 501(c)(3) status of the Maine Township Food Pantry allows for this partnership, and partial support through the GCFD, which has resulted in more food at a lower cost to the Township Pantry.

The GCFD receives monetary donations from corporations and individuals, accepts food from restaurants and other sources, and purchases food in bulk through federal government programs. Volunteers at the GCFD warehouse help prepare large quantities of food for distribution by inspecting, sorting, repacking and labeling food before the GCFD’s fleet of climate-controlled vehicles distributes food safely to food pantries and programs throughout Cook County.

Through this new partnership, the Township’s pantry is now one of those that receives a GCFD distribution every week. These services continue to be provided free of charge to the residents and the Township.

According to the 2023, Township Decennial Committee, the Pantry has tripled the number of residents served within the last few years by seeking our strategic partnerships such as this one and continuing to strengthen services by consolidating efforts and working together with all stakeholders in our community. Supervisor Dimond and the board of Trustees are committed to maintaining an effective and robust pantry for years to come!
